Rosalinda Verde with Visalia Opera Company

I sat down for Opera Chat with Rosalinda Verde, founder of the Visalia Opera Company (VOC) at the Planing Mill in Visalia.  The VOC has been performing full fledged opera productions since 2012 with Englebert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and in 2013 Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro.

Ambitious and bucking the trends (opera companies in big cities have been shutting their doors) this young and scrappy opera company has been planting classical music seeds in the fertile soil of the San Joaquin Valley.  We talk zombies and their role in introducing new audiences; horned helmets – they’re fun but make no sense; and I learn to sing opera in 3 easy steps (see my failed attempt).

About The Author
- Born in the Philippines, raised in New Jersey, and living in Visalia. I'm a fan of people and the culture they create. I arrived here from Los Angeles in 2006 teary eyed from the "smell of money" (a.k.a. cow poop) and what I thought was a lack of "things to do".I met some wonderful friends along the way that helped guide me through our close knit communities to discover a growing art culture, a love for fine food, great music, and community. It's time we share this richness with each other and the rest of the world - this is Joaquin Around.Do you have recommendations, or content to share, contact us here on the site or email me directly at niccolo@joaquinaround.com
